2.4.4
Link Purpose (In Context)

Users understand the function and destination of each link

Ensure that the purpose of each link is clear from its text or the surrounding context, so users know what to expect when they activate it. This clarity helps users with visual or cognitive disabilities navigate and interact with content more effectively.

Acceptance Criteria

The purpose of each link is understandable from its text or from the context provided by nearby content.

Examples

• A link labeled “Learn more about our services” should clearly indicate that it will take the user to information about the services offered.

• Links in a navigation menu should have descriptive text that indicates their function or the page they will lead to.

Exceptions

Links that are inherently ambiguous (e.g., “Click here”) may need additional context or description.

Tips

• Use descriptive and specific link text that clearly conveys the action or destination.

• Provide additional context where needed to avoid ambiguity.

How to test?

• Check link text to ensure it clearly describes its purpose or destination.

• Verify that the link’s function or destination can be understood in context without requiring additional information.
