Text should have a high contrast
Make sure that text and images of text have enough contrast with their background so that they are readable by everyone, including those with visual impairments.
Acceptance Criteria
• Contrast Ratio: Text and images of text must have a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against their background.
• Large Text: For large text (18px or larger), the contrast ratio should be at least 3:1.
• Incidental Text: Text or images of text that are purely decorative, part of inactive user interface components, or not visible do not need to meet contrast requirements.
• Logotypes: Text that is part of a logo or brand name is exempt from contrast ratio requirements.
Examples
• Good: Body text on a webpage with a contrast ratio of 5:1 against its background, making it easily readable.
• Good: Headings with a contrast ratio of 4.8:1, and large text with a contrast ratio of 3:1.
• Bad: Text that blends into its background with a contrast ratio of 2:1, making it hard to read.
Exceptions
• Large Text: Text that is 18px or larger, or 14px bold, needs a minimum contrast ratio of 3:1.
• Decorative Text: Text used solely for decoration or that is part of a picture with significant visual content has no contrast requirements.
• Logotypes: Text used in logos or brand names does not have a contrast requirement.
Tips
• Use contrast checking tools to verify that your text meets the minimum contrast ratios.
• Avoid using color alone to convey important information; combine color with text or other visual indicators.
• Regularly test your design with users who have low vision to ensure that text is readable.
How to test?
1. Contrast Ratio Check: Use contrast checking tools to measure the contrast ratio between text and background colors to ensure it meets the required standards.
2. Text Size Verification: Confirm that large text meets the reduced contrast ratio requirement of 3:1.
3. Design Review: Ensure that decorative text and logotypes are correctly excluded from contrast requirements and that all necessary text meets the specified contrast ratios.
